Flash Beetle

Another PF2E bestiary poem chosen at random from creatures in the first bestiary between level -1 and 2. This one is another -1 creature. I’ve rolled a lot of them lately, which just means there are fewer left in my random table. 🙂

From the Journal of Vyscaria

Well, today I was walking along in the forest when I caught sight of a cave. What drew my eye to it? The glowing little critters inside. It was beautiful to behold. Drawing nearer I saw a beetle the likes of which I hadn’t seen before. The things were the same size as me! That’s pretty big for a bug! It didn’t seem particularly hostile though, and let me watch it up close. I’ve heard of them before, I’m pretty certain. Flash Beetles, they’re called. My friend Sorn Dankil said the dwarves often use them to light their mining tunnels because they’re safer than the open flame of a torch. Considering how much they like deep, dark, caves.. I’m willing to bet the cave I found goes down quite a ways. As for me, not really inclined to explore it just yet. Plenty of things to see on the surface, after all.

Flash Beetle

They lair in the deep dark,
Their backs shedding light like a candle’s glow…
And while the caves are sometimes stark,
This is the only life they’ll ever know…

They mainly bite when they have to,
Most are content to live their lives in peace..
Their light can throw their foes askew,
It brightly flashes and then will cease…

Most Flash Beetles live far below in the ground,
They don’t need much light to see where e’er they go.
They fly around their caves making nary a sound,
And to those who tame them loyalty they show.

They aren’t the smartest of little pets,
But they will be loving if you treat them right.
Their masters know few regrets;
They’re easy to care for and give off safe light.

A tough guard is their shell;
They scurry on their legs faster than they fly.
And in the places that they dwell
Their light will linger on long after they die…

Most Flash Beetles live far below in the ground,
They don’t need much light to see where e’er they go.
They fly around their caves making nary a sound,
And to those who tame them loyalty they show.
