Sprite

Another PF2E bestiary poem chosen at random from creatures in the first bestiary between level -1 and 2. This one is another -1 creature. I’m also realizing I said -1 creatures might have short poems, but it’s really more animals than level. A lot of animals have one or two tricks and very short stat blocks.

Also, I’m basing the line about ‘gossamer leaves’ on the art from the monster cards. The sprite pictured there has wings that look like leaves, right down to fine little veins running through them like stems.

From the Journal of Vyscaria

So I left that little village. They were really nice folks, but I have a mission after all, and they were out of monsters. Making my way back through the forest I got a little turned around. I mean, I haven’t spent much time in the wilderness, don’t judge me! Anyway, I happened upon a forest clearing… The sort that seems too picturesque to be real with a little babbling brook and trees that are spread in just the right pattern to bathe the whole area in golden streams of light under the sun… I really felt at peace there. To my surprise, I wasn’t the only one. There was a fey in the treetops, and it had a conversation with me before inviting me to stay a while. Mind you, this was only after it led me on a merry chase that ended by a berry bush. Seemed it hadn’t had anyone to talk to in some time. The little fella said some things that stuck with me about my relationship to the world around me… I might have to do some research on that, though I’m not sure where exactly I’d do it… At any rate, I cobbled together some lines.

Sprite

They’re tiny enough to be caught in the breeze,
But come with no shortage of sass;
On gossamer leaves they flit through the trees,
Casting off light as they pass…

Oh, don’t pick a fight with a sprite,
They can see in the slightest of light,
They’d be happy to give you a fright out of spite,
So don’t pick a fight with a sprite!

From their form fire will spring
Toward foes that do not draw nigh,
And the bite of their weapons will burn and sting
So long as their light doesn’t die.

Oh, don’t pick a fight with a sprite,
They can see in the slightest of light,
They’d be happy to give you a fright out of spite,
So don’t pick a fight with a sprite!

Often enough with the mischief they’ve planned
If they’re in over their head,
They call on the magic they have at hand
And when you recover they’ve fled.
