Games of Shadows

Kind of a creepy song in my mind. I’m working on putting a voice track together for it, but I’m not especially good at this kind of thing so it may take a while. In the meantime, imagine it as a bit of a mournful and cautionary song. Perhaps a lament to be sung in a tavern that wants for calming and sobering.

Games of Shadows

Night draws out…
We wait around…
As the shadows grow…

And what we see…
We know will be…
Where light dances so low…

Buildings, tall and pretty
Fair the city
Where we play

Tree trunks, thick or slender
And how tender
Is the clay

We run in the night, in shadows and light
Hiding and chasing and dancing
The cold has no bite while your step is light
No matter the darkness advancing

Laughter filters through the trees
Of children carried in the breeze
And triumph is sounded whenever we please

And who now would ruin our fun?
Or wish any harm to be done?
As game after game after game is won?

[Musical Interlude]

Night draws out…
As we run about…
And the shadows here have grown…

Echoes sound…
Of joy that has drowned…
In the war this land has known…

Buildings, ruined and crumbling
A sight that is so humbling
Seeing where their children would play

Trees now twisted and aged
In this place where spirits are caged
And trapped in the memories of long-past day

They run in the night, making shadows and light
Hiding and chasing and dancing
Their anger does bite if your step isn’t light
Even when their touch is glancing

Laughter filters through the trees
Twisted by the haunting breeze
As triumph brings the living down to their knees

And who now could ruin their fun?
Or see all their evils undone?
Before, before their battle is won?

[Musical Interlude]

Night draws out…
Without a sound…
As warriors walk over scarred ground…

What they see…
Will certainly be…
More than they bargained for this time around…

Buildings, forgotten so long
And haunting wisps of the song
Of children who once came here to play

Trees now scarred from the rage
Of spirits long from their grave
Who simply refuse to fade away

They run in the night, in shadow and light,
Hiding and chasing and dancing
And ever they fight, for what is their right
As time for them stopped advancing

Laughter echoes through the trees
As warriors fall to their knees
To join their hosts in eternity

And who now can ruin the fun
Of all those who are wholly undone
By spirits for whom this day is won?

Night draws out…
So don’t make a sound…
There is no use in you praying…

Stay in your bed…
And keep your head…
Safe on your pillow laying…

P.S. I hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had a wonderful one! 🙂

    1. You’re bound to like this Friday’s post then, it’s got a song that follows a similar vein, less haunting, more playful, still cautionary in nature. 🙂
